Acupuncture and Osteopathic Manual Therapy

Acupuncture

Almost anyone can benefit from acupuncture, a 3000-year-old healing technique from Traditional Chinese Medicine. Acupuncture works to improve the body’s function and to promote the natural self-healing mechanisms inherent in all our bodies, usually through the insertion of an acupuncture needle at specific points. Conditions treated by acupuncture can range from musculoskeletal (back pains, neck pains), nausea, sports injuries, migraines, depression, and insomnia, just to name a few.

During a visit that incorporates acupuncture, the physician will take a full medical history, assess your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and determine which acupoints would be appropriate to treat. Patients will usually lay down on a patient bed in a relaxed manner while these points are stimulated using acupuncture needles. A single treatment usually lasts 15 to 30 minutes. Acupuncture will often be used to complement or replace medication or surgery.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy

Osteopathic Manual Therapy (OMT) is a hands-on technique taught in certain medical schools that is used to help diagnose illness or injury and to facilitate your body’s natural tendency toward self-healing. It is most commonly practiced by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine - fully licensed physicians who received extra training in this form of therapy and who practice a distinct whole person philosophy approach to medicine. Conditions treated by OMT include but are not limited to musculoskeletal (back pains, neck pains), nausea, migraines, sports injuries, depression and insomnia. During a visit, the physician will take a full medical history, assess your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and determine what sort of treatment would be most appropriate. Patients will usually first be evaluated while laying down on a patient bed but may be asked to engage in actions such as stretches, muscular contraction, and position changes. Treatments can include techniques similar to Chiropractic Medicine, Massage Therapy, and techniques such as Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy Techniques, Craniosacral Therapy, and more to restore balance and function to the body. Treatments usually last 15-30 minutes. Like acupuncture, OMT is often used to complement or replace medication and surgery.
