Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

We make sure that all babies in our hospital get the very best care possible when they're born. That's why we converted our nursery to a level 2 NICU for babies born prematurely or with an illness.

The T.J. Samson Community Hospital NICU can care for babies who arrive as early as 32 weeks and weigh as little as 3.3 pounds. And we have all the features premature and sick babies need, including special beds, breathing equipment and incubators.

NICU care that's close to home

Having a NICU at T.J. Samson Community Hospital benefits babies and families in our community. Up to 90% of fragile newborns can be cared for in our hospital without a need to transfer them to a facility far from home.

Now families no longer have to travel out of town to see their baby. Instead, they can visit them in our NICU 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Experts available round the clock

Should your family require our NICU services, you'll receive tremendous support from our kind and caring staff.

Our NICU team consists of:

  • Neonatologists
  • A pediatric hospitalist
  • Neonatal nurse practitioners
  • NICU nurses

We design our staff's schedules to ensure your baby receives careful attention 24/7. Our specially trained NICU nurses typically monitor only two or three babies at a time. And either a neonatologist, pediatric hospitalist or neonatal nurse practitioner is on-site around the clock should your baby's condition suddenly change.

When babies need more care

Some babies need an even higher level of care than a level 2 NICU can provide. When that's the case, we help you transfer your baby safely to a different hospital. Fortunately, the vast majority of NICU newborns can stay right here in Glasgow until they're ready to go home.
